Shelves are a great way to add extra storage to any room in your home, and there has been a recent trend to add open shelving in your kitchen to visually open up space in a smaller kitchen.
Not only do shelves provide extra space for decorations, everyday items, books, etc., but they can also make a home look more organized and stylish and are a great way to showcase your favorite items and add a personal touch to your home.
When choosing shelves, consider the size and shape of the items you want to store, as well as the size of the available space.
Wall Shelves
Wall-mounted shelves are a great option for small spaces and come in all sizes and shapes including corner shelves. There are fixed bracket or floating wall shelves. The difference is on floating shelves, you don’t see the brackets or any mounting hardware.
Another type of wall shelves are hanging shelves. Although you don’t see them much anymore, they have been making a comeback recently with the popularity of boho (bohemien) style decor that includes rope and macrame.
Built-Ins
Built-ins are great for more permanent shelving solutions, especially in your living room or laundry/mud room.
Free-Standing Shelves
Free-standing shelves can be used in larger spaces and can be used for everything from books, toy baskets, plants, pots and pans in the kitchen, and the list is only hindered by the size of your imagination.
Ladder shelves can be a fun addition to a living area, office, or child’s room.
There are a variety of materials and styles to choose from, so you can find shelves that match your home’s decor. Most are fairly easy to install, but you want to make sure that wall mounted shelves have the right support. Especially on floating shelves that don’t show the brackets or where they will be holding more weight.
And the put-together shelving units can be a huge source of frustration for those with very little patience.
